About Highway1

Highway1, a division of PCH, is the premier hardware startup accelerator. We invest in great hardware startups with an exciting business idea and a compelling prototype. We help early-stage startups design products that deliver real value to customers, that are delightful to use and that can be manufactured at scale. We run two 16-week programs a year where companies will work with dedicated engineers, and learn about manufacturing and retail in order to better understand how to build their supply chain.

 

About the role

Highway1 is looking for an outgoing, well-organized, self-motivated, and proactive events and relationship-building professional. The ideal candidate will have a background in community-building and/or marketing and event management, and be passionate about startups and the hardware industry. The community manager is responsible for: 1) Creating and fostering relationships with mentors, vendors, and partners through various events and initiatives; 2) Managing the alumni program; 3) Building awareness of Highway1 via social media, blog, and newsletters; 4) Creating marketing and communications content; 5) Managing the Highway1 Demo Day event; and 6) Researching, recommending and managing speaker opportunities. The community manager will work closely with the PCH communications team to develop communications plans, and support Highway1 announcements. The role reports to VP of Highway1.

 

Responsibilities

  • Foster, support, and grow third party relationships
    • Manage and expand mentor program: identify areas for growth; vet/recruit new mentors
    • Maintain mentor database; match startups with relevant mentors and facilitate intros
    • Manage & execute Mentor Mixer & Mentor Appreciation Events
    • Coordinate invitations to educational/informational programming at Highway1
    • Manage relationships with vendors: maintain comprehensive internal vendor database
    • Work with Office Coordinator to schedule office hours, Lunch-and-Learns, etc.
    • Assist in organizing vendor fairs
    • Research and disseminate discounts for Highway1 companies
    • Maintain and build relationships with hardware community partners to create opportunities for Highway1, such as speaking events, workshops, etc.
    • Maintain active contact system and intranet for alumni, mentors, community contacts, vendors, partners, etc.
  • Grow Highway1 Alumni Community
    • Manage alumni program through different events & initiatives
    • Develop initiatives for alumni to support current startups during the program
    • Assist in tracking funding initiatives and maintaining related databases (google docs, pitchbook, crunchbase, Angelist, etc.)
    • Manage alumni announcement schedule and event pipeline (launches, crowdfunding, new products, funding, etc.)
    • Research and disseminate information to alumni about appropriate/relevant events
  • Marketing & Events
    • Manage Highway1 events and marketing initiatives
    • Manage and monitor Highway1’s social media channels including: the Highway1 blog, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
    • Oversee the Highway1 website to keep content up-to-date, on brand, and in coordination with the PCH Communications team, Highway1 team, alumni, and other stakeholders
    • Develop unique social media campaigns to drive program awareness, particularly around application time
    • Develop an event and speaking plan that positions Highway1 as an industry thought-leader, and promotes Highway1 to potential applicants and relevant potential partners. Liaise with the PCH communications team to optimize collaboration and cross-promotion
    • Coordinate with PCH communications to manage semi-annual Demo Day
    • Coordinate all Highway1 events, including open houses, happy hours, and community-building events
    • Manage Highway1 guest lists and event invite platforms, including Eventbrite, Paperless post, MailChimp, etc.
  • Communications & PR
    • Develop, manage, and monitor monthly newsletter to Highway1 announcement list
    • Serve as Highway1 liaison with PCH Corporate Communications team
    • Assist drafting press-ready materials, such as press releases and executive biographies
    • Track media coverage of Highway1 and startup companies

  • Facility with a variety of platforms, including Excel, Google docs, Eventbrite, MailChimp and Slack
  • Experience working in fast-paced environment
  • Works well under pressure and deadlines
  • Able to manage several projects at the same time with facility
  • Unflappable and good humored
  • Self-motivated and goal oriented -- “can-do” attitude
  • Photography skills a plus
