We run two 16-week programs a year where companies will work with dedicated engineers, and learn about manufacturing and retail.

Position Summary

Highway1 is looking for an experienced firmware engineer with 3-5 years of experience in product development for its San Francisco office.  Qualified candidates will be doing a combination of coaching entrepreneurs on their development and directly doing some development for the startups.  Advisement work will involve project scoping, design and architecture reviews, and working with outside partners.  Hands-on work will involve creating firmware for microcontrollers, prototyping concepts, debugging, performing code reviews, and teaching best practices. The ideal candidate has a well-rounded background in all aspects of embedded firmware development with in-depth knowledge of systems architecture, low power and code space optimization, and interfacing with iOS/Android applications. This is a generalist role, where you’ll be working on up to 10 startups simultaneously for short sprints.

Key Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or comparable skill with 3-5 years of industry experience
  • C or C++ for embedded systems
  • Help select microcontrollers, define power management strategies, and review schematics with the HW team.
  • Experience interfacing microcontrollers with analog and digital sensors
  • Working knowledge of one or more communication protocols ( e.g. USB, CAN, UART, SPI, I2C)
  • Experience implementing firmware in bare-metal or RTOS environments
  • Demonstrated capability in applying software best-practices to firmware designs
  • Solid board bring-up and debug skills
  • RF programming experience in Bluetooth and Bluetooth Smart (BLE)
  • Developing bootloaders and experience with over-the-air firmware updates.
  • Ability to interact with other engineering disciplines - primarily mechanical and electrical engineers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with one or more microcontroller cores (ARM, AVR, MSP430, PIC, M8C, 8051)
  • Familiarity with wireless communication technologies (WiFi, Cellular, GPS, etc.)
  • Large scale consumer electronics or medical devices
  • Experience with large scale mass production
  • iOS and Android application development or integration is a major plus
  • Experience advising or teaching
  • Experience integrating requirements from creative design partners - user interface and user experience
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally a plus, but not required
