Highway1, a division of PCH, is the premier hardware startup accelerator. We invest in great hardware startups with an exciting business idea and a compelling prototype. We help early-stage startups design products that deliver real value to customers, that are delightful to use and that can be manufactured at scale. We run two 16-week programs a year where companies will work with dedicated engineers, learn about manufacturing and retail, and travel to Shenzhen, China in order to better understand how to build their supply chain.

 

Position Summary

The Shop Technician plays an important role in bringing design and engineering concepts to life by keeping the Highway1 prototyping shop organized, safe, and accessible.

The Shop Technician is highly organized and proactive, overseeing the maintenance, supply, and organization of our three shop areas: fabrication, rapid prototyping, and electrical engineering. The right candidate must have excellent interpersonal communication skills to interact with engineers, startup participants, and other team members, and you’ve figured things out with a bandsaw, a mill, a 3d printer, and a whiteboard. The ideal applicant will be proactive in creating solutions for the shop.

There will be opportunities to proactively design and execute projects.

This position is part time, 15 hours per week.

 

Key Activities

  • Organize shop facilities under direction of the technical team
  • Routine maintenance on shop equipment
  • Track and re-order supplies, as necessary
  • Be able to answer questions regarding the safe operation of shop tools

  • Experience problem solving through prototyping and fabrication.
  • Comfortable with electrical shop equipment - soldering irons, multimeters
  • Detail knowledge of general fabrication skills and hand tools.
  • Material knowledge in working with plastics, wood, and metal.
  • Finish parts and assemblies to requested detail and specifications.
  • A working understanding of rapid prototyping machines - 3D printers, laser cutters

 

Value Added Qualifications

  • Familiarity with prototyping processes
  • Soft goods skills a plus - sewing machine, pattern cutting
  • Experience with urethane casting a plus
  • Experience with the set-up and running of a CNC mill.
  • Experience with g-code and CAM packages.
  • Experience with mill and lathe
